TGMA 2026: Atown wins Producer of the Year award, reflects on surviving May 9 stadium disaster
Ghanaian music producer Atown has won his first Producer of the Year award at the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
Atown received the award for his production work on Shoulder by Medikal featuring Shatta Wale and Beeztrap KOTM.
During his acceptance speech, the producer spoke about his growth in the music industry, highlighting his transition from Hip-hop production into Hiplife and Dance music.
He also reflected on the significance of the date of the awards ceremony, which coincided with the 25th anniversary of the May 9, 2001 Accra Sports Stadium disaster.
Atown recounted being at the stadium during the incident, which occurred during a match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko SC and led to the deaths of more than 120 people following a stampede.
He expressed gratitude for surviving the tragedy and for the journey that has led to his recognition as an award-winning producer.
Born Eugene Nii Odoi Okpoti, the producer's professional name, Atown, is inspired by Adenta, the Accra suburb where his music career began.
