Black Sherif has won his first Songwriter of the Year award at the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) for his song Sacrifice.

The award added to his earlier win for Best Afropop Song of the Year with the same record during the ceremony held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on May 9, 2026.

While receiving the Songwriter of the Year award, Black Sherif described the recognition as particularly significant.

“This is my first Songwriter of the Year award. This one is heavy. This is very, very heavy,” he remarked.

The category is regarded as one of the most competitive at the awards scheme and has previously been dominated by respected songwriters such as Okyeame Kwame and Kofi Kinaata.

This year’s nominees also included Kofi Kinaata for Have Mercy II, Akwaboah for Obi Nnyim (Obinim), Ko-Jo Cue for Abebrese, Stonebwoy for Send Them A Prayer, and Cofi Boham for Take Me Home.

Sacrifice, one of the standout songs on Black Sherif’s sophomore album Iron Boy, explores themes of responsibility, sacrifice and emotional exhaustion in supporting loved ones. Meanwhile, in the official music video, the artist was shown providing timely financial intervention for hospital patients burdened with bills.

During his speech, Black Sherif also acknowledged producer and sound engineer Samsney, noting Samsney co-produced Sacrifice, and manned mixing and mastering of his albums. Samsney, standing to Sherif's right, contentedly bore the Songwriter of the Year plaque.
