Traders and other commercial operators at Agbogbloshie, popularly referred to as the Nzema Market, have been given until August 28, 2026, to vacate portions of the area earmarked for the construction of a new 24-Hour Economy Market.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) formally served the occupants with a one-month notice on Tuesday, August 4, ahead of the planned redevelopment.

The Assembly said the affected locations include the Agbogbloshie Cargo Station, the Nzema Market and sections of the Yam Market.

It warned that structures within the designated areas will be removed after the August 28 deadline as work begins on the project.

According to the AMA, traders and other businesses affected by the exercise will not be left without alternative trading space. The Assembly has prepared a separate parcel of land where the displaced operators will be relocated.

The redevelopment follows consultations involving traditional leaders, market authorities, traders, community representatives and other stakeholders.

As part of preparations for the project, the AMA began marking structures within the identified areas on Tuesday, August 4.

A public education exercise followed on Wednesday, August 5, with officials engaging traders, residents and community leaders on the redevelopment plan and the planned clearance.

The sensitisation campaign is aimed at explaining the relocation arrangements, the clearance process and the expected benefits of the new facility.

The AMA says the project is intended to support the government’s 24-Hour Economy programme by providing a dedicated market facility capable of supporting commercial activity around the clock.

The Assembly has therefore urged all affected persons to comply with the August 28 deadline and prepare to move to the designated relocation site.
