A/R Four illegal miners killed in pit collapse at Bepotenten Sukuum
Four persons have lost their lives following a mining pit collapse at Bepotenten Sukuum, a farming community in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, when a pit at an abandoned mining site suddenly caved in on a group of individuals engaged in illegal mining activities.
The deceased have been identified as Nartey Solomon, 30; Ezekiel, 22; Awudu, 27; and Yaro, 26, all residents of the community.
Police at Jacobu reportedly received information about the tragedy at approximately 5:30 p.m. after the assembly member for the area, Samuel Ekwam Ananse, alerted authorities.
A police team subsequently proceeded to the scene for investigations.
Preliminary findings indicate that the victims, together with another miner who survived the incident, were working at the abandoned site when the collapse occurred unexpectedly.
Parts of the land are reportedly under reclamation by a private company.
With support from community members, police retrieved the bodies of the four victims from the debris.
Initial examination by investigators revealed that the victims sustained severe injuries. One of the deceased, identified as Ezekiel, reportedly suffered critical bodily injuries, while the remaining victims sustained multiple head injuries.
The police crime scene team later inspected the area and conveyed the bodies to the St. Peter’s Catholic Hospital Mortuary at Jacobu for preservation and autopsy.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
