Charles Amissah Case: Step aside if you can’t handle the pressure – Health Committee in Parl.
Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee, Mark Kurt Nawaane, has urged healthcare workers who feel unable to cope with the demands of the profession to leave the job, following findings from the investigation into the death of Charles Amissah.
Speaking after receiving the report from the three-member committee led by Agyeman Badu Akosa, Mr Nawaane stressed that Ghana’s healthcare system relies heavily on discipline, ethics, and professional responsibility.
The committee recommended disciplinary action against several health workers over alleged lapses in the handling of the late engineer, who died after struggling to access emergency medical care.
Mr Nawaane praised the investigative team for what he described as a transparent process, particularly for identifying individuals allegedly connected to the failures that led to the incident.
According to him, the report represents a shift from the usual practice of blaming institutions alone, noting that accountability must also extend to the conduct of individual professionals.
He emphasized that medical practitioners are expected to operate within established ethical standards and seek assistance from senior colleagues whenever they encounter challenges beyond their capacity.
The Health Committee Chairman added that healthcare professionals who choose to remain in the profession must be committed to delivering responsible and ethical care at all times.
“We are saying that it is beyond just the facilities; it is the individuals. Please, if you are a medical professional and you are tired of the work, you can resign. Ghana will survive,” he said.
“If you are ready to work, there are ethics. If you can’t do something, you call your colleague doctor or senior doctor. One funny thing about the senior doctors is that they are always happy to be called,” he said.
