Boakye Asafo Agyei in police custody

The Ghana Police Service has restored calm in Akyem Osenase following heightened tensions over a disputed attempt to install a new chief in the town.

The situation escalated after plans emerged to install Boakye Asafo Agyei as chief of Osenase, reportedly backed by the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin.

A letter from the Okyenhene’s office had earlier informed regional police authorities of the intended installation.

However, the Queen of Osenase, together with key traditional leaders and kingmakers, strongly opposed the move, insisting that no stool vacancy had been declared and no candidate had been approved.

They further questioned Asafo Agyei’s eligibility, citing concerns over his lineage.

In response to the rising tensions, the regional police command secured a court injunction to halt the planned installation, while local authorities, including the Municipal Chief Executive, directed that the process be suspended indefinitely.

Despite these directives, reports indicate that a delegation linked to the Okyenhene, led by the Kyebi Abontendomhene, attempted to proceed with the installation.

Although initially turned back by police at a checkpoint, the group reportedly gained access to the Osenase palace through an alternative route.

The development triggered unrest, with youth in the area reportedly mobilising toward the palace.

Police intervened swiftly, entering the premises and arresting Asafo Agyei along with two others.

Videos circulating online show officers moving in to effect the arrest as the suspect, who had been hoisted by supporters, attempted unsuccessfully to evade capture.

The police subsequently escorted the visiting delegation out of the town, a move that helped de-escalate tensions and restore order.

Officers later scaled down their presence after calm was re-established.

Reacting to the incident, a local traditional leader expressed appreciation to the police for preventing violence and maintaining peace in the community.

The status of Asafo Agyei remains unclear, while efforts to obtain an official response from the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council have so far been unsuccessful.https://youtu.be/bwB0Yr4vhOs
