The Ghana Tourism Authority has unveiled plans to introduce a second paragliding destination as part of efforts to expand domestic tourism and strengthen Ghana’s appeal on the global travel market.

The announcement comes as the annual Kwahu Easter Paragliding Festival takes off at Odweanoma Mountain, drawing thrill-seekers and visitors from across the country and beyond.

Chief Executive Officer Marilyn Maame Efua Houadjeto revealed in an interview on Channel One News on Friday, April 3, that feasibility assessments are currently underway, alongside engagements with aviation authorities and other key stakeholders.

She indicated that Adaklu Mountain in the Volta Region is being considered as a potential site, with the initiative possibly commencing as early as next year.

This year’s festival has already attracted more than 50 participants for paragliding flights, with four pilots—two from the United States, one from Peru, and one Ghanaian—leading the activity. Among them is Mike Blake, a US-based pilot who has supported the event for two decades, underscoring the longstanding international partnerships behind the festival.

Despite the enthusiasm, officials have expressed concern over a decline in the number of participating pilots in recent years, raising questions about capacity and sustainability.

Deputy CEO Abeiku Aggrey Santana noted that this year’s operational decisions were guided by the need to uphold safety and service standards.

Industry players, however, view the proposed expansion to Adaklu as a promising step that could draw more international visitors and broaden Ghana’s adventure tourism portfolio beyond Kwahu.

The initiative forms part of a wider strategy by the Authority to enrich tourism experiences and position Ghana as a leading hub for adventure travel in the region.
