Ghana is set to officially unveil the Marine Protected Area in the Greater Cape Three Points Area on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, at Busua Beach Resort in the Western Region.

A Marine Protected Area (MPA) is a designated region of the ocean or coast managed for the long-term conservation of marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.

By limiting human activities such as industrial fishing or extraction, MPAs serve as essential refuges that restore habitats, boost fish populations through the "spillover effect", and support sustainable tourism and local economies

The initiative, which forms part of efforts to safeguard marine ecosystems and promote sustainable fisheries, will focus on protecting marine biodiversity, restoring depleted fish stocks, and supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities.

The launch will be held under the auspices of the Vice President, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who will serve as Guest of Honour.

She will be joined by the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur.

The Marine Protected Area is expected to play a key role in advancing Ghana’s blue economy agenda by promoting sustainable use of ocean resources while ensuring long-term environmental conservation.

Authorities say the project represents a significant milestone in national efforts to balance economic growth with environmental protection, particularly in coastal communities that depend heavily on fishing.

Officials emphasize that protecting marine resources today is essential to securing livelihoods and ecological stability for future generations.
