Osman Ayariga calls for urgent youth development action at Oxford Forum
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Youth Authority, Osman Ayariga, has called on Commonwealth countries to treat youth development as a matter of urgency during his address at the Commonwealth Youth Development Summit at University of Oxford.
The event, organised by the Commonwealth Youth Council, brought together young leaders and policymakers from across the globe.
Drawing from Ghana’s experience, he pointed to the work of the National Youth Authority in driving youth-focused initiatives.
He explained that Ghana has adopted a structured approach that ensures young people are central to national development planning.
He highlighted the importance of the National Youth Policy, noting that it provides a clear roadmap for youth inclusion and participation.
According to him, the policy fosters collaboration between government and young people, leading to more effective programmes.
Mr Ayariga cautioned that in many countries, youth development is often treated as an afterthought.
The NYA CEO argued that such an approach limits opportunities for young people and undermines national progress.
He concluded by urging governments to adopt proactive measures that prioritise youth empowerment, emphasising that investing in young people is essential for sustainable development.
