Asamoah Gyan labels opening match against Panama as crucial for Black Stars' success
Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has identified Ghana’s opening fixture against Panama as the most vital match of their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s World Cup Central, Gyan argued that the team's ability to progress from Group L — which also includes England and Croatia — hinges significantly on the result of this first encounter.
While acknowledging that Ghana appears stronger than Panama statistically, Gyan warned against complacency. He noted that Panama earned their place on the world stage for a reason and described them as a side that requires careful attention.
"We have to make sure that we get the three points," Gyan stated, emphasising that the team should not settle for anything less than a victory.
The former striker characterized Group L as "tricky" but suggested that a win on June 17 would provide the necessary momentum to face their European opponents.
Before the tournament begins, Ghana will play friendly matches against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2.
The Black Stars' official World Cup journey then kicks off against Panama, followed by matches against England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
