CAF unanimously endorses Gianni Infantino for 2027 FIFA re-election
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially endorsed Gianni Infantino for re-election as FIFA President for the 2027–2031 term.
The decision was finalised during a meeting of CAF Member Associations on April 29, 2026, held in Vancouver under the leadership of CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
Unified African Support
CAF confirmed that all 54 member associations have reached a consensus to back Infantino. As Africa represents one of the largest voting blocs within FIFA, this unanimous endorsement is considered a significant development ahead of the 77th FIFA Congress.
The support underlines a unified stance from the continent regarding global football governance and the continuation of current developmental strategies.
Mandate and Eligibility
Infantino has led FIFA since 2016. While he has already served three mandates, his initial period began mid-cycle. This has led to discussions regarding FIFA’s three-term limit; however, the current endorsement proceeds on the basis that he is eligible to seek the 2027–2031 mandate.
Impact on African Football
The partnership between CAF and FIFA under Infantino’s tenure has resulted in several key changes for the continent, including:
- World Cup Expansion: The increase to a 48-team format, providing more slots for African nations starting with the 2026 tournament.
- Financial Support: Increased development funding through the FIFA Forward programs.
Looking Ahead to 2027
The official presidential election is scheduled to take place during the 77th FIFA Congress in 2027, which will be hosted in Morocco. With CAF's early backing, Infantino enters the election cycle with a solidified base of support from the African continent.
