Police order armed escorts for GPL teams after Berekum Chelsea attack

The Ghana Police Service has directed increased security for top-flight football teams, ordering all regional and district commanders to provide armed escorts for clubs travelling to matches in the Ghana Premier League.

Under the directive from the Inspector-General of Police, at least two armed officers will now accompany teams within their respective jurisdictions to ensure the safety of players and officials during travel.

The decision follows a fatal armed robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus on April 12, 2026, which led to the death of 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong.

According to reports, the team was returning from a league match against Samartex when gunmen ambushed their bus on the Bibiani–Goaso road. The attackers allegedly opened fire as the driver tried to reverse, forcing players and officials to flee into nearby bushes.

Frimpong, who was shot during the attack, later died. He is the only confirmed fatality.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of football teams travelling across the country, following similar attacks in recent years.

Police say the new escort arrangement is intended to restore confidence in domestic football and protect players, technical staff, and match officials.

Authorities have also confirmed the arrest of the alleged gang leader and another suspect, while investigations into the attack continue.
