In a significant move to crack down on player misconduct, The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has approved two major Law amendments proposed by FIFA. The new regulations, aimed at addressing discriminatory and inappropriate behavior, will be implemented at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The decisions were finalised during a Special Meeting in Vancouver, following extensive consultations with global football stakeholders.

New Grounds for Red Cards

The amendments introduce specific scenarios where referees may now issue straight red cards to players and team officials:

- Covering Mouths in Confrontations: In a bid to increase transparency and curb verbal abuse or discriminatory remarks, any player who covers their mouth while in a confrontational situation with an opponent can be sanctioned with a red card. This will be applied at the discretion of the competition organiser.

- Protest Walk-outs: Referees now have the authority to issue a red card to any player who leaves the pitch in protest of an officiating decision.

Penalties for Team Officials and Match Abandonment

The crackdown extends beyond the players on the pitch. The new rules specify that team officials—including managers and coaches—who incite their players to leave the field in protest will also be subject to a red card.

Furthermore, FIFA has reinforced the consequences for matches that cannot be completed due to these protests. Under the new guidelines, any team that causes a match to be abandoned will, in principle, forfeit the match.

Implementation for 2026

These changes come as FIFA prepares for the expanded 48-team tournament hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. FIFA officials confirmed that these amendments will be formally communicated to all participating national teams in the coming weeks to ensure full compliance before the tournament begins.

The IFAB stated that these measures are essential to protecting the integrity of the game and ensuring a respectful environment for players, officials, and fans alike.
